Argentina to Receive 150 Buses from China for Transport Modernization

The Argentine company Grupo Metropol, acquired by the Chinese giant King Long, is investing $45 million to renew its bus fleet in Buenos Aires. Between December and January, 150 new CNG buses will arrive in the country, marking a significant step towards a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable public transport system in the metropolitan area.

This change starts with people,” highlighted Javier Zbikoski, director of Grupo Metropol.

Almost 100 years of experience Metropol is an Argentine family company with almost 100 years of experience in mobility. It operates urban, provincial, and national lines, transporting more than 800,000 people across the three jurisdictions. In 2026, it will celebrate 30 years of its operations in the AMBA (Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires).

In Chile, it is integrated into the Santiago Mobility Network with over 700 buses, 50% of which are electric.

Between December and January, 150 buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), developed in Xiamen, China, by King Long, a world-leading bus manufacturer, which acquired Grupo Metropol, will arrive in the country. The company operates in the Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires on lines 65, 136, 151, 163, 176, 182, 194, 195, 228A, 237, 276, 310, 322, 326, 327, 336, 365, 386, 392, 448, 503, 507, 510, 670, and 741, and has recently incorporated lines 302 and 303, according to information gathered by Noticias Argentinas.

This initiative is part of a US$ 45 million investment aimed at completely renewing the fleet of the lines the company operates in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, and represents a concrete step towards a transition to cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable energy in public transport.

The company's board traveled to China to receive and supervise the acquired vehicles, which have already begun their transfer to Argentina and will start arriving between December and January, marking the beginning of a new era for urban mobility in the AMBA.

“Being at the plant, seeing the finished units, and listing them for shipment is a historic moment for our company and for the sector. This important sale for Argentina represents 20% of its operations in Latin America. We are bringing the buses from China, but we are training the talent here. This investment reflects our commitment to a cleaner, more modern, and more efficient mobility for passengers and for the City,” highlighted Eduardo Zbikoski, director of Grupo Metropol.

Cleaner and more efficient transport The new CNG buses allow for a more environmentally friendly operation, improving air quality and urban comfort: ● Reduction of particulate matter (PM) → purer and more breathable air ● Reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) → less impact on health ● Up to 25% less CO₂ emissions per kilometer ● Quieter operation → more pleasant journeys and quieter urban environments Together, the 150 CNG buses have an impact equivalent to replacing 1,500 diesel buses, significantly contributing to the City's climate goals.

CNG is today the most accessible and scalable alternative to accelerate the energy transition in transport, thanks to its availability, existing operational infrastructure, and economic and environmental benefits. It allows for a decrease in dependence on imported diesel, promotes national suppliers and services, and advances towards a sustainable and competitive model.

Each bus also incorporates: ● ADAS driving assistance system ● Security cameras and advanced telematics ● Smart sensors for predictive maintenance and greater safety.

Cutting-edge technology, scale, and speed The production and delivery of the 150 units were completed in record time, with a manufacturing cycle of only 16 working days, demonstrating the technological and volume capacity of the Chinese industrial ecosystem. King Long is the third-largest bus manufacturer in the world. It produces 70 units every day.
